Belize on a Budget: How I’d Live Comfortably on $2,000 a Month

Everyone talks about how cheap Belize is—but cheap and comfortable aren’t the same thing. (click here to read more about this)
The truth? You can live well here on about $2,000 USD a month, but only if you know where to spend, where to save, and what to skip.

Housing: Your Biggest Choice

Rent is where you’ll feel the difference between tourist fantasy and real life. (click here for info about renting vs buying)

  • Inland towns like Corozal (click here), Punta Gorda (click here), or San Ignacio (click here): $500–$800 gets you a nice 1–2 bedroom home.
  • Coastal areas like Placencia (click here), Hopkins (click here), or Ambergris Caye (click here): $1,200–$1,800 for something comparable.
If you can live a few blocks off the beach, you’ll save hundreds and still hear the waves.

Food & Daily Living

Fresh produce is cheap. Imported snacks are not.

  • Weekly market trips: $40–$60
  • Eating local (stews, rice & beans, fry jacks): $5–$8 a meal
  • Imported cereal? $12 a box.
Belize rewards those who eat like Belizeans.

Healthcare, Utilities, and Fun

  • Healthcare: $30–$50 doctor visits; add a few hundred yearly for meds or travel insurance.
  • Utilities: Expect $100–$200/month, depending on A/C use.
  • Internet: $75–$100 for reliable Wi-Fi.
  • Entertainment: You’ll spend less because you’ll be outside more.

The Secret

Living on $2,000 a month in Belize isn’t about sacrifice—it’s about simplicity. You trade Costco runs for market mornings, highways for dirt roads, and stress for sunlight.

If you can adjust to that rhythm, you’ll live better here than you ever did back home.

I was born and raised in Belize, and now living in the U.S., I’ve seen firsthand what it’s like to live between these two worlds. My personal experience, paired with insights from others who have made the transition, inspired me to write helpful reports for those considering Belize for expat living.

I have also written books about Belize that are now available on Amazon. You can find them with this link, click here.
