Belize 10/2025 Update#9: Borders Opening & A Safety Reminder for Expats

Belize continues to make headlines in 2025—and not just for its beaches. Two stories stand out this week that every traveler, expat, or future retiree should pay attention to.

Borders Opening: Free Movement Across the Caribbean

Belize has officially joined a new CARICOM-style free movement pact, alongside Barbados, Dominica, and St. Vincent.

So, what does this mean?

  • Citizens can now live, work, and travel across borders without special permits.
  • For Belizeans, it opens new opportunities in neighboring nations.
  • For expats, it could shift the landscape—making residency, healthcare access, and regional travel a little more flexible.

Think of it as a Caribbean version of the EU’s open borders policy. It won’t change life overnight for retirees from the U.S. or Canada, but it’s a sign that Belize is becoming more integrated regionally. That kind of stability is good for anyone investing their future here.

 Safety Reminder: Maya Beach Incident

On the flip side, Belize also faced a tragic event in February. A U.S. real estate developer was shot and killed at his luxury resort in Maya Beach in February.

Incidents like this are rare, but they’re real. And they highlight a truth I tell every client:

Location matters. Belize is generally safe in expat hubs like Placencia, San Ignacio, Corozal, and Ambergris Caye—but not every property with a “paradise” label is the right fit.

Before you buy land, start a business, or choose your community, you need to know the local dynamics, not just the marketing pitch.

 The Bottom Line

Belize is opening new doors regionally, but it’s also reminding us to move wisely. Opportunities are growing—but safety, community, and due diligence always come first.
