Belize Update#8. 9/28/2025: Booming Tourism & What Expats Really Need to Know

Belize isn’t slowing down in 2025. Between new eco-tourism routes, boutique stays in Placencia and Corozal, and fresh opportunities for expats, it’s becoming one of the most talked-about destinations in Central America. But if you’re considering moving—or even just scouting—there’s more beneath the surface you need to know.

Tourism Growth That’s Hard to Miss

Belize is leaning into sustainable tourism. Think jungle lodges in Cayo, boutique resorts in Placencia, and eco-adventures that keep the focus on nature, not overdevelopment. For travelers, that means more choice. For expats, it means more infrastructure popping up in places that used to feel remote.

The Expat Balancing Act

Here’s the part glossy brochures don’t talk about: if you’re American, Uncle Sam still wants his cut. U.S. tax obligations don’t go away just because you’re sipping a Belikin on the beach. Add Belize’s own residency rules and healthcare planning into the mix, and you’ll need a strategy that covers both sides of the border.

  • Residency options: Permanent Residency after a year, or the QRP Program for retirees 40+ with $2K/month income.
  • Healthcare: Public care is affordable but limited. Most expats budget for private clinics or cross-border insurance.
  • Taxes: U.S. filing deadlines (June 15 for expats living abroad) + Belize’s March 31 filing mean you’ll juggle both calendars.

Bottom Line

Belize is opening its doors wider to both tourists and long-term expats. But the dream lifestyle only works if you plan ahead. Know your tax obligations, understand your residency path, and have a healthcare safety net.

I was born and raised in Belize, and now living in the U.S., I’ve seen firsthand what it’s like to live between these two worlds. My personal experience, paired with insights from others who have made the transition, inspired me to write helpful reports for those considering Belize for expat living.

I have also written books about Belize that are now available on Amazon. You can find them with this link, click here.
