Dreaming of retiring in Belize and bringing your furry companion along? Whether it’s your dog, cat, or any other beloved pet, moving to Belize with your pet can seem like a challenge—but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, with the right planning and knowledge, you can navigate the process smoothly.
What You Need to Know About Pet Importation to Belize
If you’re wondering how to bring your pet to Belize without the stress, here are some key steps to keep in mind.
1. Health Certificates and Vaccinations: The first step to bringing your pet into Belize is ensuring you have the proper documentation. Your pet will need an up-to-date health certificate from a USDA-accredited vet, along with proof of vaccinations such as rabies and distemper.
For example, did you know that pets entering Belize must have proof of Rabies vaccination administered at least one month before arriving? This is just one example of the detailed requirements to ensure your pet can safely and legally enter the country.
2. Pet Import Fees: One of the most common questions expats have is how much it costs to import their pet. In Belize, the import fee is around 25 USD per dog. This fee ensures your pet’s health inspection and clearance by Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) at the border.
But there are other fees to be aware of, depending on how many pets you’re bringing and additional health inspections at the border. Want to know about the other fees that may apply? I’ve listed more detailed costs in my cheat sheet (click here), along with the full importation process to make sure everything goes smoothly.
3. Parasite Treatment & Microchipping: Another essential step is making sure your pet has received treatment for fleas, ticks, and worms. Belize is strict about ensuring that pets are free of parasites before entering. For example, your pet may need tapeworm treatment within 30 days of arriving. Pets must also be microchipped—this is crucial!
