What I’d Do Differently If I Moved to Belize Again

If I had to do it all over again, I’d do three things differently—and they would’ve saved me time, money, and some real stress headaches an expat in Belize says.

1. Rent Before You Commit

I rushed into buying because I thought I “knew” Belize. But living somewhere and vacationing there? Not the same. The vibe changes when you're buying groceries in the rain and trying to find a plumber. I’d rent for at least 6 months—test out the area, the neighbors, and my own expectations.

2. Budget for the Unexpected

My original budget looked great on paper—until reality hit. Water pump failure. Border run costs. Customs fees for one dumb Amazon package. Belize is affordable, but it’s not immune to curveballs. Now I tell folks: add 20% cushion to whatever number you’re working with.

3. Ask More Questions—Even the Awkward Ones

I didn’t ask enough tough questions early on. I didn’t want to seem rude. Now? I’m asking everything. Who maintains that road? What happens during hurricane season? Is that beautiful rental next to a bar that blasts reggaeton until 2 a.m.?

I love living between Belize and the U.S., but I learned some of this the hard way. If you’re planning your move, don’t just follow the sunshine—follow the details.

I was born and raised in Belize, and now living in the U.S., I’ve seen firsthand what it’s like to live between these two worlds. My personal experience, paired with insights from others who have made the transition, inspired me to write helpful reports for those considering Belize for expat living.

I have also written books about Belize that are now available on Amazon. You can find them with this link, click here.
